Frost Blaze - Live from the 868

"Live from the 868" is probably the baddest local album I've heard in years, no euphemism. In a year full of plenty good local releases, Frost Blaze's disc was the one that had me listening from the first track to the last track and then repeat...and then repeat again. If you don't know Frost Blaze he is a hard trini rapper or by his words - "a man not a manicou" and regularly "eats mcs like lappe and tatoo". When you listen to Frost Blaze you get it raw and trini to core no compromises.

And Frost Blaze keeps it raw right through. My favourite track "Welcome To Trinidad" features this introspective gem: "Until the babylon stop moving evil, till dem and mt hope stop killing ppl, easier for a politician to enter the kingdom through the eye of a needle than for I to go legal".

Other times as on "Hypnotize Me", he's running down a "Blanchisseuse Big Breed" which is a hilarious alliteration even before he notes that she's "thick like a sea moss with a linseed". On the other girl track "Move" featuring Bongah Chops and Chromatics, Chromatics steals the show talking bout a girl who has him "dribbling like Latapy" because of a bumper "you could use as ah arm rest". Nice.

Frost Blaze also produces every beat on the disc and his production fits his rap style to a tee; it's kinetic filled with plenty horns, congah drums that feel cluttered in a good way. Trust me people, for $40TT this is a bess deal. Get in Highway Records and cop this one time. You can check out more of Frost Blaze on his bandcamp page where you hear more tracks from the album. Face out.

My Thoughts on the Rick Ross "Teflon Don"

Rick Ross has certainly come a long way. The boss has always possessed an impeccable ear for beats and a booming vocal presence but his topics were trite, his flow was basic often drowned out totally by generic ad-libs and he was out-shined routinely on his albums by his features. Well he's still getting out-shined but at least his flow has dramatically improved now, to the point that they make of for his lack of variety in subject matter.

One thing I admire about Ross is that he has a highly accurate depiction of his artistic strengths and weaknesses; a valuable artistic gift that allows him to fill an album with complimentary guests that still outshine him in some cases and provide the lyrical variety that he lacks giving depth to his one-dimensional boasting. I've listened to "Teflon Don" a few times now and I've concluded it's his best as its has as much high points as "Deeper Than Rap" without the one or two filler songs towards the end. As usual heed the spoiler alert if you haven't heard the cd yet.

1) "I'm not a star" - Great intro. As usual he isn't saying anything deep or profound but his voice sounds great on the beat and his flow is nimble around the snares. Nice hype track(8/10).

2) "Free Mason feat Jayz" - Now much talk has been made about this song and on an unrelated note I want to say that I don't care about whether Jayz is a free mason or illuminati or whatever but I would like to hear him explain the "On To The Next One" video. In my opinion he didn't explain anything to me or change my opinions in any way. That aside, it's a pretty dope track with Ross sounding like he's saying something and Jay directly addressing the Free Mason 'rumours' in an expected but witty way. John Legend kills on the hook fitting the feel of the track perfectly. (8/10)

3) "Tears of Joy feat Cee-Lo" - This song is good in theory but I felt it didn't come together all that well. Seems disjointed but I give Ross kudos for trying some introspection. (7/10)

4) "Maybach Music III feat TI, Jadakiss and Erykah Badu" - With most sequels (Spiderman, Godfather etc) the third one falters and it seems so here but just by a little. Its bad still but somehow it doesn't seem the huge event that the others were despite the cast. (8/10)

5) "Live Fast, Die Young feat Kanye West" - This is my favourite track on the cd right now. Featuring a beat that sounds like a leftover from "College Dropout" (in a good way) and Ye spitting like he's still in that era... it's a win for me. Again, there isn't anything Ross says that resonates with me but he is able to gel his flow to the beat which is enough. (9/10)

6) "Super High feat Ne-Yo" - When this song dropped a month or so ago the beat stood out but by now it's a skip. Cliched vintage Ross lyrics plus an okay hook. (6.5/10)

7) "No.1 feat P. Diddy and Trey Songz" - This is a fun little nothing song that is only spoiled (a little) by the involvement of Diddy in it. It's positioning places it as a nice little intermission between the songs that preceded and the monsters that follow. (7.5/10)

8) "MC Hammer feat Gucci Mane" - This is a monster of a beat that Ross thrives on (think "Hustlin") and he absolutely destroys it based on delivery alone. The conceit is that he's living frivolously...like MC Hammer. It's a paper-thin concept that Ross lazily never bothers to expand much but it doesn't matter as his delivery alone makes the song. Gucci doesn't mess it up which is good for him. (9/10)

9) "B.M.F. (Blowin Money Fast) feat Styles P" - Lex Luger who produces "MC Hammer", also produces this song which give the illusion of a seamless move from track 8 to 9. Ross deals with this one as well but is showed up at the end by a grimey-sounding Styles P who boasts of having guns from the video game "Red Dead Redemption". Real bad. (9/10)

10) "Aston Martin Music feat Drake and Chrisette Michelle" - This is a nice laid back tune and sounds like something that belongs on Drake's album. Drake features here singing an extended part of the hook but isn't really needed and it seems like he was brought on for name recognition. Chrisette by herself kills on the hook and Ross holds his own by impressively fusing his delivery with the beat, which doesn't sound like anything he rapped on before. (9/10)

11) "All the money in the world feat Raphael Saadiq" - This song was kinda meh for me. It wasn't terrible but the beat is pretty generic-sounding especially following "Aston Martin Music". The hook is kinda meh too... I expected more from Saadiq. An ok closer I guess. (6/10)

And that's my rating. "Teflon Don" is a great album, one of the best for the year but not a classic. Let me hear what you think in the comments. Face out.

Street Style Saturdays (back again)

Street Style Saturdays is one of the few (and to my knowledge only) shows that displays underground talent. This is not the first time that I'm letting you know about SSS but they were on a little hiatus and have since picked back up around three months ago.

These days SSS takes place in Lion's Den and I suggest you join the fb group if you want to know when the next one is. I've been to both shows this year, was featured in the second, and had a time. The enjoyment comes from seeing artistes you've never heard of come with styles you've never seen and still rip the mic. There are some nifty little features that add even more to the experience like a session where they play music emailed in before and ask the crowd to rate as well as the freestyle session with all the artistes present that starts and closes off the show. Good stuff.

As I said previously, I've long since retired my Underground Trini Freestyles segment and I see this as its spiritual successor so I fully endorse it. They put up videos of performances periodically and I'll be posting them here so stay tuned. And check some of the vids that have been released so far. Face out.

Underground State of Mind

Most artistes start off as underground...except for probably Justin Beiber or something. You start off as a tolerated annoyance to friends and family via unforgivable crimes such as singing off-key loudly in the bathroom, rapping over hip hop beats at 10pm using the most spartan of microphones, hiding somewhere strumming a guitar when you're supposed to be washing dishes etc. After months (or years) of this you eventually should become good (or not so bad) to the point where suggestions are made that you get whatever you're attempting heard on some widely followed media, probably radio signalling the commencement of the real work. That's when you're officially an underground artiste.

Being underground is very educational. It allows you to pick apart the entire machine which by some carefully crafted illusion seems seamless on tv. A cd is no longer a cd but a cd cover, a case, maybe plastic covering and a blank disc which needs to be burned. A video is getting people to come your shoot, organizing them, paying a camera man, lights, video treatment and editing. And getting played on radio is impossible. Just joking of course, getting anything you create played is a process with a variable compendium of house rules.

When you understand the above you swiftly approach another dilemma. Stay underground or go mainstream? These days, you can make a living off both. The difference is just the size of the+ market. Even a small market can reward if you dominate it. Are you willing to pay $500TT for a beat or $10000TT? If you're like me you can probably get a $10000TT sounding beat for $500TT. Are you going to write the name of your album on your cd in marker or pay $10TT per cd to print it using spiffy colour graphics. My experience so far is that most buyers stopped caring ever since music became free but I'd be lying if I said none do. And are you willing to build your fan-base brick by brick or rent it from a radio station? Lower overheads means more profit while higher risk means larger payoff. It depends on your preference really.

Fans always want mainstream success for you and who doesn't love to see when an underground artiste they've supported makes it big and everyone finally appreciate their talent. I feel that way about Drake somewhat. However, most aren't willing to accept the compromises that come with such placement, spawning rampant accusations of falling off or selling out. So then you look at the money you've saved and wonder which way to go. Do I shoot three videos and grab fans virally or shoot one and wrangle with Synergy which can guarantee a certain level of notice? It's a decision no one can make for you but it will be made either way. Face out.

J Square gives his fans "One More Chance"

I like gospel, especially the Trini brand. There are quite a few local gospel acts I admire as they make some of the most creative music locally and achieve a very high quality of production both video and audio-wise with their projects. One of those that I admire a lot, not only because of the quality of his work but also because of the quality of his work-ethic and savvy is J Square. I really enjoyed his first album "Higher Ground" but it was his strategies like giving prizes for bringing fans to his fan page and his "May Madness" scheme where he would perform and minister at venues across the island for free that really intrigued me and made me check up on what he was working on periodically.

Right now Mr Square is preparing his second album which is launching in Naparima bowl on Thursday 15th July from 6:30pm to 10:30pm. I downloaded a mixtape last month from J Square which you should be able to access by giving him your email address and trust me...it was realllll hard ("Christian Players" is my favourite). Is not no preachy gospel but real stuff, real advice advising people to focus on God and not on folly which is important in these times. So trust me when I say that Jay Square is one to support on Thursday 15th. And I've seen him live and Square does real move the crowd, is not no studio artiste ting at all.

So ppl I urge you to head down to the bowl and cop the album "One More Chance" from J Square and continue supporting local. Face out.

SHINE: The third edition

Three months ago, around this time, I began an open mic series affectionately titled Shine. Things weren't perfect in the first show but were improved in the second and I seek to make things even better in this edition come Wednesday. In its short existence, Shine has already featured some of the most talented upcoming artistes in Trinidad and Tobago; people like John John, Frost Blaze, Make it Hapn, Bongah Chops, Gary Acosta, St. Ans, lAdymore, yours truly Da Face and many others...and I promise you that Shine will continue to do so.

Every show, I try to feature select artistes performing a set in addition to the open mic session. In this edition we feature none other than creative/gifted/talented rapso/poet/hip hop artiste "Skeeto" as well as talented artiste and dynamic performer Nickolai who is the lead singer for the band Gyazette which rocks crowds around the country with their infectious style that combines rock with a distinctly local flavour. I assure you both of these guys know how to move a crowd so things should be swinging.

Other than that, the mic will be open as usual and there will be artistes there to entertain so yuh safe whether you desire an outlet to perform or wish to come out and take in some good vibes. I will be there as always performing songs from my mixtape "Recession Music" (download here) and my album "Hitchhiker's Guide to Uwi" (listen/buy here) with copies of the album in my bag, that I always move with, for your purchase. We have a nice night lined up and as always emcee duties will be held down by Pearl Hamilton and deejaying will be most likely done by Andre. Everything is taking place inside Equinox bar on uwi campus (close to kfc) and I thank the establishment for all the support I've received thus far (see here for more event details). See you there. Face out.

Upcoming Underground Cds To Get

So the 'summer' holidays are almost upon us and worldwide this is the time when radio stations enjoy the most listens. School children aka the people with the most time on their hands spend a lot of their time tuned in and highly-rated tunes quickly become hits as listens translate to spins in the club and hopefully bought cds.

Well the selections I have here aren't music of the typical bubblegum, summer jam variety but are sure to get your head nodding, your mind engaged and remain in your mp3 player/car deck/ cd player for weeks. I now introduce you to the upcoming underground albums/mixtapes for this year (that I know of).

Cloud 9 - The Rennovation

This one is dropping July 3rd during a cd launch. If you don't know Cloud 9 is a trini hip hop group that always provides thought-provoking music over head nodding beats (they even produce their own music).

6326 - The New Dynasty

This one will be out in 2010. They also will be performing in the Cloud 9 show so maybe they will preview some tracks.

Bongah Chops - The Realeyezation mixtape

This mixtape should already be out. It has plenty hard tracks on this one and I'm also featuring on a song called "Misleaders". I believe you can purchase this one in Highway Records.

Frost Blaze - ???

Frost has an album coming out this year but I'm not sure about the name yet. I'm also on track on this album.
UPDATE: Actually the name of the Frost Blaze album is "Live from the 868" and the group he is a part of, "Synod Entertainment", will also be dropping a mixtape titled "The Cornmill (asshole)". He has assured me that both of them will be dropping sooner than I may think.

Bonez - Why So Serious??

As far as I've heard, this one is done already. This one should be out pretty soon. You can get more info on it here.

St Ans - The HolyTrini3

I'm not sure if I spelt the mixtape name yet but Ans is doing a triple cd mixtape so that should be interesting both content and packaging wise. He's been dropping many freestyles on facebook recently so this should be out sometime soon.

So there you have it, the projects to look out for in 2010. Make sure and cop these cds and support local. To anyone I've forgotten, remind me. Till another time, Face out.

8 Hustler reasons why Trinidad is big and small

Trinidad is big because:

1) You can sell almost 300 cds in different parts and ppl still might not know who the hell you are.
2) People that you don't know are the sh*t in places you've never heard of.
3) It's hard to cover north and south Trinidad if you're selling by your lonesome.
4) Underground music, especially rap, is invisible to like 90% of the population.

Trinidad is small because:

1) Put up a song on facebook that people like and it spills over into the real world, in the strangest of places.
2) Perform in an open mic regularly for a year and it seems like everyone has seen you perform at least once.
3) Synergy TV's live studio is 'claustrophobic-ly' small and yet stars are born there...ever so often.
4) Ever so often, out of nowhere strange people will walk up to you and recognize you favourably you for your music which always feels good.

My Thoughts on Drake's "Thank Me Later"

I doh normally do this kinda thing but I actually had some opinions on Drizzy's new cd. If you don't know, this highly anticipated release which follows on the heels of his universally rated and celebrated mixtape "So Far Gone" was leaked this week and I got a chance to listen it. My general consensus on it? I like it. It took a few listens after the initial disappointment of it not being the classic that the fans would have wanted or the haters would have feared but nonetheless, overall I'm feeling it.

NOTE: If you're planning to buy it and don't want any details until the disc is officially released, then proceed no further because I'm dealing this one on a track by track basis. (Deep breath) So here goes...

1) Fireworks ft Alicia Keys - This is an okay opener. I like the beat but Drake's using the same flow from countless other songs where every eight or so bars he pauses and adlibs "yeah" or "damn". Alicia's singing is okay. (6/10)

2) Karaoke - Most other blogs I've read rate this as the worst song on the album. I'm feeling it though. The harmonies on this one real rough and fits the 808 and heartbreaks type beat. (8.5/10)

3) The Resistance - Same Drake flow but the lyrics on this one hit hard - "The game needed life/ I put my heart in it, I blew myself up, I'm on some martyr sh*t/ carried the weight for my city like a cargo ship". The hook knocks too. Only nitpick is the emo-type introspection is getting a little bit old. Just a little bit. (8/10)

4) Over - My thoughts on this one haven't change since I first heard it. It features one of the best hooks in recent memory but the verses are so-so. It sounds better here though, as it ups the pace on the cd. (7.5/10)

5) Show Me A Good Time - This one is definitely a banger. Drake switches up his flow to a quicker pace on this one and Kanye West blesses him with one of the better beats on the album. Sounds like a single. (9/10)

6) Up All Night feat Nicki Minaj - Another big tune. The beat goes hard and Drake goes in. Nicki does well here too with one of the wittiest set ah lines on the entire disc: "I'm a bad bitch, I ain't never been a mixed breed/ On a diet but I'm doing donuts in the six speed". Wayyy, Nicki daz you? Plus she claims she made a million on a mixtape. Hmmm... (9/10)

7) Fancy feat Swizz Beatz and TI - I really wish I was a fly on the wall of the studio to find out how Swizz Beatz convinces rappers to put him on hooks to their songs. The beat sounds like some Just Blaze ish but Swizz spoils the song by delivering the most annoying chorus in recent memory. It's a shame though because TI kills on it. I like everything but Swizz on this and because of the chorus I routinely skip. (6/10)

8) Shut It Down feat The Dream - This song is a whopping 6:59 minutes long but unfortunately contains only 5 minutes of a good song. It's smooth as butter though and I tend to listen it for a while then skip. If you like your melodies and harmonies then you'll like this one. The producer of this one "Omen" is the same dude who produced Lil Wayne's "I'm Single" which makes sense.(7.5/10)

9) Unforgettable feat Young Jeezy - This is one of my favourite tracks on the album. Drake is on his "So Far Gone" type lyrics here equating the pursuit of success and love - "and all the girls that played me eat your mother******* heart out" while Jeezy comes with, as he puts it, (and I agree) one of his realest flows ever. The beat which samples Aaliyah goes hard too. (9/10)

10) Light Up feat JayZ - This is the first song that piqued my interest in this album. The beat real rough and Drake's chorus sounds haunting over it, almost convincing you that success can be the worst thing that can happen to you...sure. Some have said that Jayz came soft here but I don't agree. I especially like the part where he talks over the beat during the first chorus telling somebody (Guru?) to turn it up or turn it down or whatever like he used to and then goes in. Delivery wise Hov kills and it's always interesting to guess who he's sending subliminals for. So far by my count he put something for Damon Dash: "And to these niggas I'm like Windows 7, You let them tell it they swear they invented you..." and another possible jab at bloggers saying he got killed by Kanye on "Run This Town": "I don't too much blogging, I just run the town I don't do too much jogging". A little Beans jab is there too: "ah once was, cool as the funds was". Good stuff. (9/10)

11) Miss Me - This is the happiest song on the album. Drake talks about he wishes he could marry Nicki Minaj which is funny as hell to me. Glad to hear Wayne on a track too who brings his normal weird funny punchlines. (8/10)

12) Cece's Interlude - This interlude or whatever it is totally throws off the album for me. I'm not sure what he was trying to do but this just slows down and kills the mood for no good reason. (4/10)

13) Find Your Love - I liked this song when it was released as a single but it just sounds out a place here thanks to the preceding interlude. The hook still works though. (7/10).

14) Thank Me Now - This one is kinda a mixed bag. I hated it at first but now I will have to say I like it. Lyrics are typical Drake stuff but there are some nice punchlines in there. One thing's for sure, it doesn't really work as an album closer and the cd still comes to an abrupt end. (7.5/10)

So that's my opinion on it there. Let me hear yours. Face out.

Voting Songs

Voting songs real different. They can quite aptly be defined as art for the purpose of business or, as I scratch my beard, a very non-hypocritical form of such that reduces art to it's base form; just another service in exchange for money.

Voting songs exist for the promotion or demotion of a particular party regardless of the political convictions of the creator and around election time so, are usually done for profit. It's a divorce of artistic expression made easier when coupled with several scores of blue notes. Personally I'm not sure I'd partake (guess it depends on the amount) but that's a whole post by itself. The question is, do they influence your vote?

Some of these songs can really stick in your head though. I've found myself humming Terri Lyons' "We Voting PNM" after a serious bun down of the Prime Minister and his misdeeds. Trust me, it doesn't make a good closing statement. De Fosto's anti-PNM offering "Ah Cyar Vote Fuh Dat" is a more lyrical offering but is similarly sweet and builds up nicely into the chorus that evokes the title, which in itself is a nice catch phrase. "Ah Cyah Vote Fuh Dat"...probably not.

And apparently is not me alone who getting catch. I hearing nuff people singing those songs dese days, even the apolitical ones who does bun down the voting process when is really laziness or lack of an ID card It's the one part of the process they can stomach I guess.

I guess that's the thing about music in general. People listen melody first and lyrics after enabling political messages to get in your cranium subliminally. And the results can be impressive. You bring Beenie Man down and then you beat the COP back into third.

Saying that the songs are catchy is one thing, but saying that they influence your red finger decisions are another. What about you? Do they you influence your vote? Check out two of the more prominent voting songs below and let me know in the comments. Face out.

TIM STARR - Dave Miller Project

Tim Starr is one of the founding members of Spotrushaz. Most of you all would know this pioneering hip hop group Spotrushaz but if not then I yell shame on you and advise you to fire up google and do some research. Okay, I'll spare you, you can get in here but you get my point. There have been a few changes in the lineup of the group as it now comprises of Meet Sauce, XO, BDangerous and Tim Starr but dey still pumping and apparently they are also going Wu Tang style and all releasing solo projects as well (check BDangerous here. And Tim Starr is the next release out.

His upcoming album is called the "Dave Miller Project" and from what I have heard at his show in Ibiza a few weeks ago called "The Prelude", it features an eclectic mix of RnB, hip hop, dancehall and soca anchored by the witty, staccato flow of Tim Starr. It has a lot of guests and from my count I have H2O Flo, Fridge from H2O Flo, Meet Sauce, XO, Make It Hapn, Roxii, Fireball and a few others. From what I heard at the show it should be both an interesting and polished project so look out for that as I will.

What I like most about what Tim Starr is doing though is his use of video blogging as a medium for getting information out to his fans. He teased people by gradually revealing the guests for "The Prelude" and currently is revealing performances from the show and other updates via several video installments on Facebook. So don't sleep people, Tim Starr is coming out in a big way 2010 with the "Dave Miller Project" on the horizon and plenty video content which you can take in here.

Oh yeah, you can check out the newly released video for his single "Trinidad Is Dying" below. Face out.

SHINE

This Wednesday from 8pm-10pm the underground music scene is going to get a jolt of energy. Inside Equinox bar located on the uwi campus (right next to the Rituals close to KFC) some big artistes are going to be doing their thing alongside anyone with enough confidence to step up to the open mic. Yes you heard correct, the format of the show is one where the mic will be left open from 8pm to 9pm so anyone can come in between that time and rip the place in two. During the open mic session the limit will be two songs in order to accommodate as much artistes as possible but other than that, the stage is yours.

The door price is only $10TT so you should have enough money to patronize the well-stocked bar and purchase cds from artistes on the night.

After the open mic session wraps up, the carded artistes are going to be doing there thing @ ten minutes a piece so trust me, it's going to be something to look for. So without further ado, meet the cast.

JOHN JOHN

John John is an extremely talented soulful RnB singer who you might have caught on Synergy tearing up the place or singing the hook in Chromatics' "Cold Blooded" video (check it out below) He may be on earlier than expected but is always on point.

GARY ACOSTA

Gary Acosta is a local poet who has been illuminating open mic stages across Trinidad for some time now with his deep messages, intricate rhyme schemes and passionate delivery. He has an event called " Uncut, Unplugged and Untitled " coming out later this year and should have something good cooked up for Wednesday.

CLOUD 9

Cloud 9 is a local hip hop group comprising of J-Smoke and Quake that combine a winning chemistry, good flows, tight hooks and good delivery to result in one of the best hip hop groups in Trinidad and Tobago. They already have a mixtape out called "Two Monitors and a Keyboard" and another one on the way soon.

FROST BLAZE

Frost Blaze is one of the most powerful and controversial artistes in hip hop who is quick to always say what most think but are afraid to express. He has an album coming out this year as well so be sure to check that out.

MAKE IT HAPN

Make It Hapn is probably the most respected and revered mc in local trini hip hop currently. His album "Ghetto Child" has been widely acclaimed as a classic on the underground scene containing vivid storytelling and imagery about the issues facing a lot of youth in Trinidad today.

DA FACE

Well it's me so what can I say. Just know that I'll be bringing my A++ game and doing songs from my mixtape "Recession Music" as well as my current album "Hitchhiker's Guide to uwi" which will be available and on sale for $20TT. Face out.
