Ten Reasons Why Bad Soca Music Is YOUR Fault

1) You convinced Machel that Road March is more important than good music, the opposite of what he learned years ago.

2) You let Iwer George win road march with a song containing a chorus that mentions the word "hand" over 20 times.

3) You let ragga soca aka 'soca with lyrics' die rendering Bunji Garlin a fish out of water.

4) You robbed Destra Garcia at least one soca monarch and two road march titles.

5) You only now realised in 2011 that Benjai is a big artiste.

6) You let Chinese Laundry advantage KMC in years when he had several big tunes.

7) You let Shurwayne Winchester win road march twice with the same song.

8) You disapprove of chutney rum songs but support them under the influence of rum.

9) You support(ed) the trend of half-assed dancehall soca collaborations starting with "Rubber Waist" by Machel and Red Rat (yeah I liked that song but it was half-assed).

10) You let deejays not only control what gets played via the soca mafia but now make a hustle out of we music.

I especially like the KMC point. He wasnt the only one raped for lyrics though. There was a crew called Kings of Origin that wrote a few hits for him as well.

Reeeaaall good analysis bro!
Keep telling it like it is! Peace.

Face...yuh especially right about the Shurwayne one...Neil Bernard kill we with the same beat for 4 road marches after the other between 2 for shurwayne and 2 for faye-ann...total sadness...and we eat it up like hot pelau on a panorama afternoon...

hallelujah!!!!!!!!!!
somebody actually put into words my sentiments on machel's offerings for 2011.his material is just not on par with the quality we know and love him for.
i concur with the rest of this post as well.it's our damn fault we welcoming back de savannah stage with the crap artiste's (i use that word loosely) giving us for 2011.

This is good but it should be changed to "trinidad soca."Then again trinis believe their island is the only island in the carribean as well as the only island who produces good soca music.

Ok in the case of number
1. this year in my opinion is the only year i could say Machel is a road march JUNKIE lol, but I'm willing to give him a free pass on this one just this once lol.
2.Iwer well Iwer is the older wealthier version of soulja boy, not necessarily a good or bad thing to me.
3. 4. 5. 7. 8. and 9. i agree with 100%
6. He so damn complacent that i don't want to agree with lol but i guess he became that way after the injustices done to him.
10. I'm not gonna comment on, don't think it have enough space to write so much lol

#3 I really wish you will enlighten the masses with this one...forgive my ignorance but I'm taking into consideration Garlin's contributions this year...ragga soca isn't dead

Co-sign on point #4. Destra was robbed one too many times. Unfortunately, I don't think the cards are in her favour this year...but we'll see.

#9 Chutney soca sucks Major A**. I honestly think the Gov't should've discussed the credibility of the genre in its CURRENT state before awarding a $2million 1st prize. All i gotta to do is compose a song bout rum or nanny and make it rhyme and I have a hit.

I sooooooo agree with robbing Destra of Road March on a few Occasions! SO AGREE!

Wow! Wow! True True and True. My wife and I both agree.

I agree in general with #10, except that there ARE some competent soca singers who came out of the DJ booth. And Shal is one. He's had many decent songs, he's put in time, he's worked hard and has improved a LOT. He is working hard on his craft, and has taken stick for many years. He's not a jump in without washing foot kinda fool. So I disagree with your using his photo to illustrate.

All that make-out for Shurwayne though? lol

Art, good or bad, is always a reflection, like it or not, of the society it comes out of. Soca is true to us and honours exactly what we are. We are nothing more, nothing less than the art/music we make. Doh feel it.

ALl of a sudden certain radio djs decide they want to be artist too!!! when it have nuff artist out here who doing a better job than them and because these artist is not radio djs , they not getting much air play!! based on ethics a radio dj should not be allowed to work for a station and be an artist at the same time!!

This Dj/turned soca artiste converstion is one that has been going on here in Barbados for quite some time. We in de same boat!

You may need some correcting...Iwer didn't win a Road March with "Hand (anananananananananananan x 45 lol). That was the year that Shadow won both RM and Soca Monarch and placed 2nd in Calypso Monarch (2001) - a final and glaring reminder of what "good" soca was.
The trend of soca-dancehall collaborations actually started in 1994 with "soca Butterfly" by Byron Lee featurng Admiral Bailey, and continued with "Weakness For Sweetness" (Remix) by Nathalee Yorke and Mega Banton in 1996 - both of which weren't tht bad. Then you had "Jump And Wine" by Beenie Man in 1998 (which can still stand on its own). "Rubber-waist" is mediocre and a poor example.
Ultimately, bad soca isn't our fault either. In a discussion I had with my sis, she emulated the same argument that the artist can only deliver what we demand.
The last time I checked, the artist had the power to shatter our conventions and challenge us to see something differently.

Word, dude! It's madness that Destra has no Soca Monarch or Road March titles (I will still answer to Bacchanal any time); KMC has had some really strong music, including this year ("Wha make yuh feel yuh woulda get away"); and I will never understand how music that manages to get airplay despite all the obstacles then isn't played on the road... And why aren't Jouvay tunes actually played at Jouvay??

@morgs I stand corrected. Iwer did not win road march with that song. I thought he sang that the year he tied with Super Blue but I was incorrect. I stand by my rubber waist argument though because it was the first high profile dancehall soca collaboration and was the one that started the trend.
